Interests

My general research interests include the evolution, ecology, taxonomy, morphology and conservation of Neotropical diversity, with emphasis on amphibians and reptiles. In a collaborative effort with colleagues and students, we study the mechanisms that promote speciation in the Andes, Amazon basin, and the Galapagos Islands. We are also interested in the impact that introduced species and diseases have on the diversity and phenotype of native species.

Projects

  • Amphibians-Evolution, ecology, and diversity: This is a long-term project that seeks to document Ecuador’s amphibian species, the threats they face and the most viable mechanisms for their conservation
  • Glassfrogs-Evolution, parental care, diversity, and conservation: Crystal frogs are one of the most interesting groups of amphibians in the neotropics. We study their diversity, diversification patterns and parental care
  • Harlequin frogs-Diversity and conservation: In collaboration with the Jambatu Center we work to understand the diversity of frogs of the genus Atelopus (one of the most threatened in the world), promoting their conservation in nature and in ex situ conditions
  • Reptiles of Ecuador: In close collaboration with Tropical Herping, we are systematizing the diversity of Ecuador’s reptiles, a work that will be published as a book and will complement the already published “Reptiles of the Galapagos”
  • Galápagos-Ecology and diversification of marine iguanas: Marine iguanas represent one of the most fascinating examples of evolution and adaptation. In collaboration with the Galapagos Science Center and the University of Leipzig, we study the ecological processes associated with the diversification of these species in the Galapagos Islands
  • Galápagos-Effect of industrial fishing on sharks: In 2017, the China-flag ship Fu Yuan Yu Leng 999 was captured at the Galapagos Marine Reserve. This freighter contained more than 7,000 sharks. Thanks to the collaboration between Galapagos National Park, the USFQ Environmental Engineering Laboratory and the Galapagos Science Center we were able to access many of these samples in order to study the magnitude of fishing on this scale, as well as its impact on human health due to the accumulation of heavy metals
  • Paramos-Diversity of invertebrates in thermal zones: We study the biogeography of invertebrates in rivers with thermal influence on the moors of Ecuador. This work is carried out in collaboration with the USFQ Aquatic Ecology Laboratory
  • Amazon-Amphibian Diversity: In an ambitious project, in collaboration with the Pontifical Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, the American Museum of Natural History and the Andes University, we are studying the origin, evolution and diversity of amphibians of the Amazon Basin
  • Amazonia-Conservation: I am part of the Science Panel for the Amazon, a regional initiative that seeks a long-term conservation of the Amazon, based on integrated science, ancestral knowledge and sustainability
