Approach
Freshwater ecosystems, apart from being vital for providing us with essential resources for our survival, are complex, dynamic, biodiverse, and mysterious. They inspire us to study, appreciate and conserve them. That is why at the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory (LEA), we are passionate about researching the biology and ecology of these ecosystems.
Projects
Our projects cover different areas, such as:
- Taxonomy of aquatic invertebrates and freshwater fish, to understand the composition, biodiversity, and conservation in different Ecuadorian freshwater ecosystems.
- Research on the behavioral ecology, populations, and aquatic communities to conceive the country's freshwater ecosystems' fascinating dynamics.
- Studies about the functioning and ecological processes in rivers and streams from various ecological hierarchy levels. We investigate the changes in the composition and structure of the main ecological processes: water cycle, biochemical (or nutrient) cycles, energy flow, and community dynamics and their effects in different places of the country.
-
In addition, we try to understand processes such as the decomposition of the leaf litter in tropical rivers and its implication in these ecosystems. Despite being a crucial ecological process, it is little known. We seek to understand the relationship of this ecosystem's process with the structure and composition of tropical river organisms.
- We conduct applied projects related to bio-monitoring of freshwaters and the maintenance of ecological flows to contribute to the conservation of rivers and the integrated management of Ecuadorian water resources.
- We monitor the hydrology of Ecuadorian rivers. For this, 67 loggers have been distributed and installed throughout the country. This allows us to obtain information on the flow of these monitored rivers. Additionally, ecological data is taken in each of the ecosystems to complement these places' eco-hydrological information.
-
We undertake research in the enchanted Galapagos Islands. This project aims to investigate the structure and composition of the invertebrate communities living in freshwater ecosystems. In this way, we are able to understand the relationship of these organisms with the environmental variables that each of these ecosystems has.
-
We have recently participated in several projects and initiatives for research, monitoring, and conservation of Andean-Amazonian gradient within a diversity of issues (invertebrates and fish), climate change, and the effect of hydrological alterations in montane rivers. Despite its importance, this gradient faces serious threats, and its conservation is our responsibility.
-
We also work on citizen science through institutions that seek to generate information on fish and water at a basin scale. In this way, citizen scientists commit as informed and empowered actors to manage sustainable fisheries and conserve wetlands.

OUR VISION
OUR MISSION
The Aquatic Ecology Laboratory (LEA) mission is to research and generate knowledge about the biology and ecology of freshwater ecosystems, emphasizing lotic ecosystems. We carry out projects within various topics such as taxonomy of freshwater invertebrates, behavioral ecology, populations, and aquatic communities. We study how rivers and streams work together with their ecological processes. We also carry out applied projects related to bio-monitoring of fresh water and the maintenance of ecological flows to contribute to the conservation of rivers and the integrated management of water resources in Ecuador.
