Interests

My researching interests are mainly focused on the areas of evolutive biology, ecology, and conservation. The three lines of research in which I am currently working together with a large number of colleagues are the biogeography and phylogeography of Andean birds, both regionally and locally; the ecology of the avian malaria infections; and the use of geographic information, together with other tools, for the delimitation of conservation areas and the evaluation of the effect of the climate change on the natural population.

Projects

  • Evolution of the Ecuadorian Hillstar, Oreotrochilus Chimborazo, from a genomics perspective (with Carlos A. Rodríguez-Saltos, Fernanda Duque, Juan Freile, Patricia Salerno, and Juan M. Guayasamin).
  • Ecology, demography, and conservation of the Blue-throated Hillstar, Oreotrochilus cyanolaemus: a tool for the conservation of a paramo ecosystem in southwestern Ecuador (with Boris Tinoco and Juan Freile).
  • Geographic variation and systematics of the Chlorospingus flavopectus-semifuscus complex (with Manuel Sánchez-Nivicela, Jorge Avendaño, Juan Carlos Sánchez-Nivicela, Ana Torres, and Jérôme Fuchs).
  • Phylogeography of Ixothraupis guttata (with Juan Freile, Leovigildo Cabrera, Michaël Moens, Jefferson García-Loor, Laura Rosado-Llerena, and Miguel Lentino).
  • Phylogeography of Eutoxeres aquila (with Laura Rosado-Llerena and David Ocampo). • Phylogenetics and systematics of the New World crakes (Aves: Rallidae) (doctoral thesis of Emiliano Depino, with Nacho Areta and Jorge Pérez-Emán).
  • Ecology of parasitic infections in Bosque Protector Jerusalem (with Héctor Cadena, Daniela Bahamonde, Xavier Chavarría, Martín Quiroga, and Nubia Matta).
  • Trade and conservation of sharks in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (with Juan M. Guayasamin and many others).
  • Site Fidelity and connectivity on humpback whales in the coasts of Esmeraldas, Ecuador (with Judith Denkinger, Patricia Chanabá, and Nathalia Valencia).
  • Efficiency of protected area expansions to represent species under climate change scenarios (with Javier Fajardo, Janeth Lessmann, Jesús Muñoz, and other collaborators).
  •
